Thomas1 Faxon, from England, is first of record in New England on Dec.4,1645 when John Winthrop Jr. returning from a trip to Connecticut passed through Braintree to view the new Iron Works forge set up on Monatiquot River that year near the present junction of Adams and Middle Sts. In his journal on the trip on the above date he notes that he "passed over Monatiquot at twilight, came by the noise of the falls to the forge. Lodged at goodman ffacksons?? Mr. Hoff's [Atherton Hough] farmer". He was a tenant farmer for Mr. Hough on the 450 acre grant made to the latter by the town of Boston and which Thomas Faxon bought in 1656 of his son Rev. Samuel Hough of Reading (S.D. 34-184).
Thomas Faxon brought with him his wife Joane -, and three children. His wife Joane is of record only once when she assented to the sale of the Faxon share of Block Island, Washington County, Rhode Island which Thomas Faxon had purchased in shares with others in 1660. He sold his 1/8 share on Sep.17,1662 and his wife Joane acknowledged the deed Jun.4,1663 (S.D. 4-54). Her death is not of record. His stay at Block Island was brief.
He married 2nd Sep.5,1670, Sarah Savil, widow of William Savil, formerly widow of Thomas Garnett of Duxbury and Bridgewater, and daughter of William Mullins of Braintree & Plymouth. She died in 1697 leaving a will, dated Aug.13,1694 (she aged 73yrs then), proved Nov.25,1697 mentioning her daughter in-law (step daughter) Lydia Savil, wife of Benjamin Savil and her cousin Ruth, wife of Peter Webb.
Thomas Faxon became freeman May 6,1657, was elected representative 1669, selectman 1670-2. He died Nov.23,1680.
The house of Thomas Faxon where John Winthrop Jr. stopped for the night in Dec.1645 on his trip from Connecticut was standing until about 1900 and the cellar hole yet remains, though fast being encroached upon by new building (1950). It is situated between Dickerman Lane and the brook east of present Abbott Road . Here also died the widow Sarah Faxon and probably her father William Mullins in 1673, brother of the famed Priscilla Mullins, wife of John Alden. It remained in the Faxon family sometime, then passing in the late 18th century to Gen. Ebenezer Thayer and his descendant Charles Dickerman, and finally the Hollis family, the last occupants.
Thomas Faxon was a very large landowner and leased other lands as well as a tenant farmer. On Jan.16,1666 he bought 180 acres of John Richards, being the farm at Squantum (now the airport) first given to Roger Ludlow by Dorchester and then occupied by Capt. Thomas Hawkins whose son sold to Richards in 1664 (S.D. 5-13 and 5-171).
Thomas Faxon also was lessee in 1667 of the 700 acre farm given to Rev. John Wilson by Boston "wherein Thomas Faxon doe now dwell" as mentioned in the inventory of the Wilson estate Aug.14,1667 (S.D. 5-53).
