He was a manufacturer of boots and shoes, and had one of the most extensive and successful shoe factories of his day. He was also a manufacturer and currier of leather. John Dyer became a man of large wealth and influence, highly respected and honored in his community, (G&PM)

He made his will, 28 Apr. 1848, mentioning his wife Polly and his children, John, Joseph, Benjamin, Luther and Calvin, and his daughters Clarissa, wife of Stephen Burrell; Hannah, wife of Quincy Loud; Mary, wife of Perez Vining; and Sophronia, wife of Samuel Torrey, (Norfolk Probate Records, 82: 84.)
