THOMAS DRAKE first appears at Weymouth, 14 Dec. 1663. On that day the town granted him six acres in the First Division and eighteen acres in the Second Division. (Weymouth Land Grants, 283.) The author of Thomas Drake and Descendants, published in 1896, stated that he was the son of William and Margaret (Westover) Drake, born and baptized in the parish of Colyton, county of Devon, England, 13 Sept. 1635,, and that Elizabeth Drake, who married in Boston, 8 June, 1654, Ezekiel Hamlin, and Joane, the wife of Thomas Randall of Weymouth,-were his sisters. William Drake, a gentleman of Ash in the parish of Musbury, was licenced to marry Margaret Westover of the same place, 14 Nov. 1620. (Exeter Marriage Licences, p. 70.) Musbury and Colyton are adjoining parishes. The parish registers of Colyton call William Drake a gentleman of the hantlet of Yarbury in Colyton. They show the following baptisms:
John Drake, son of William of Yar )ery, bp. 24 Mar. 1621-22.
Dorothy Drake, daughter of Wil iam of Yarbery, bp. 16 Mar.1623-24.
Eleanor Drake, daughter of William of Yarbery, bp. 15 Dec. 1625.
Joane Drake, daughter of William of Yarbery, bp. I I June, 1628.
William Drake, son of William of YaTbery, bp. 22 Dec. 1629.
Jane Drake, daughter of William of Yarbery, bp. 13 Feb. 1630-31.
Elizabeth Drake, daughter of William of Yarbery, bp. 9 Dec. 1632.
Endimian Drake, son of William of Yarbery, bp. 25 June, 1634.
Thomas Drake, son of William of Yarbery, bp. 13 Sept. 1635.
William Drake, the father, died 18 Nov. 1636, and was buried in the Temple Church in London. His daughter Eleanor married John Steward of Axmouth. His daughter Jane married at Axmouth, 5 May, 1651, Thomas Steward of Axmouth. His son William Drakemarried Letitia Bailie and resided in Colyton, and there had twelve Children baptized, 1654 to 1678.
Ezekiel Hamlin of Boston made li;q u~ll 9.1 Tiil,, 1600 T, 0-f he said: "My will is y' my brother Thomas Drake of Weymouth & My friend Mr. Thos. Walker and James Ingles be my over seers," proved 27 Nov. 1690. (Suffolk Probate, 8: 4.) Here we have the evidence that Thomas Drake of Weymouth and Elizabeth Drake, who married Ezekiel Hamlin, were brother and sister. This does not prove that they were children of William Drake of Colyton. Letters of administration were granted to Thomas and William Drake, sons of Thomas Drake, late of Weymouth, yeoman, deceased Z3 Sept. 1692. His inventory was apprized 30 Aug. 1692, at which date he was "lately deceased," by John Holbrook, Micajah Torrey and John Taylor (Suffolk Probate, 13: 54, 55); total, E337 2s. Thomas Drake was a soldier in King Philip's War.
Thomas Drake, "aged 49 yeares," deposed concerning the Indian woman, servant of Stephen French, 7 Mar. 1677-78. (Suffolk Court Files, 1689.) Thomas Drake, Sr., was chosen to serve on the grand jury by the freeholders of Weymouth, 20 July, 1692.(Ibid. 4096.)
