Edward Derby was one of the one hundred purchasers in 1700 of the Boston Waste Lands in Braintree where he was then living, but he is identified chiefly with Weymouth where most of his descendants remained. See History of Weymouth for further data.
He resided in both Weymouth and Braintree, his first child being born in Weymouth, his second being recorded in both Weymouth and Braintree, the next four in Braintree, and his seventh child at Weymouth. His will contains the following essential facts (Register,49: 340-341): Edward Derby, "being sensible and apprehensive of the near approach of death," made his will 4 Jan. 1723-24 as follows: TO his wife Rebecca Derby part of his house and one-third of his income for life. His son Jonathan Derby to provide for her. His son Sa. Derby to have a single share of his estate, as "he went from nineteen years of age and married." To his son Jonathan one-third of his "living in Weymouth." To his daughter Sarah Cobb X40; To daughter Jane Derby X50 and four silver spoons that her mother left. To daughter Rebecca Derby L50; to his daughter Ruth Derby E50. His land in Braintree to be sold to defray debts. His unmarried daughters to have their portions at 21 years of age or upon mar- . His wife Rebecca to be executrix and son Jonathan Derby nage. executor. Witnesses: John Vinson, John Vining and Nathaniel Symmes; probated 13 Jan-.fT=- 4. (Suffolk Probate Records, 23: 101.)
