He was in the shoe business in Quincy until 1866, then was employed at the Custom House in Boston for 25 years until retirement. He was town clerk 1856 and Representative to the General Court 1857. He served in the Civil Warin Co. H. 4th Regt. and was afterwards a member of Hancock Light Guard. He was called "Capt. Frank" and resided on Franklin St. opposite the John Adams birthplace in a house now standing (1952), built in 1857.

He was surveyor of highways 1729, fenceviewer 1732,1741 and on several committees until 1754. He resided on half of his father's estate which he received by will and shared with his brother Samuel. No division is on record but in 1769 he began selling off his share and in 1771 had apparently disposed of all, but no record has been where they went. He was called a housewright in the deeds. His son in law William Hobart purchased the homestead except for two acres he gave his daughter Comfort who remained in Braintree. His part of his father's estate was the southerly part, on the south side of Pernis Hill. He joined the church in 1726 and Zipporah in 1727
