BiographyBiography
Frances (___) Jackson's origins and parents are unknown. She married Edward Jackson by about 1630. Their children were all baptized at St. Mary's Whitechapel, London, England so she may have been from the London area. Her husband Edward was was baptized at St. Dunstan’s Church Stepney, London, England on February 3, 1604/5, son of Christopher and Susan (Johnson) Jackson of Bednal Green, tailor. [1] [2]
The family apparently came to New England between February and October, 1643 [1] when he was deeded land in Cambridge, Massachusetts. [3]
Frances died at Newton, Massachusetts on the October 5, 1648, when a town record says Frances Jackson daughter (sic) of Edward died. [1] [4] It is thought this could be an error and should read wife, since there is no recorded daughter Frances.
After her death, her husband Edward married second, widow Elizabeth (Newgate) Oliver, on March 14, 1649 at Cambridge or Newton. [4] [5] She was the daughter of John Newgate of London and earlier the wife of John Oliver of Boston, Massachusetts. [1]
Edward died at Newton, Massachusetts, aged 79 years and 5 months, on July 17, 1681. He is buried in the East Parish Burying Ground at Newton. [1] The stone also states that it was repaired in 1825, by his descendants indicates his death as June 17, 1681 [4] but Edward’s inventory of his estate, states that he died July 17, 1681.
Edward Jackson had an extensive estate valued at L2447 19s, with his real estate valued at over L2000. In his will dated June 11, 1681 and proved on August 26, 1681, he left bequests to his:
wife Elizabeth
sons Jonathan and Sebas
daughters Hannah Ward and Rebecca Prentice
sons-in-law John Ward and Thomas Prentice
grandson Jno Ward Jr.
and many children of his second marriage, step children and grand children and great grandchildren [1] [3]
Children
Israel baptized at St. Mary's Whitechapel, London on March 9, 1631; probably buried on March 20, 1631. [1]

Hannah baptized there on May 1, 1634; married John Ward [1]; died at Newton in April, 1703/4. [4]
Rebecca baptized there on October 12, 1636; married Thomas Prentice. [1]
Caleb baptized on October 10, 1638; probably buried at St. Mary's on November 20, 1638. [1]
Joseph baptized on September 13, 1639; probably buried at St. Mary's on September 28, 1639. [1]
Jonathan born in 1641; married Elizabeth Baker [1]; died at Boston on August 28, 1693. [3]
Sebas/Sebeas, thought to have been born on the passage from England; married Sarah Baker on April 19, 1671 at Newton; died at Newton on December 6, 1690. [1] [5]
Research notes
There is a question whether Frances was related to Ann, the third wife of John Newgate. This is because in 1676, Ann left legacies to Frances' children by Edward Jackson, and not to his children by his second wife.[6]
Another speculation is whether Frances was a Seaborn, given that her son Sebas was also called Seaborn. Given that he was probably born at sea, this might have been a compelling coincidence. NOTE: Others have said that Sebas is actually short for Sebastian, though no documents support this.
