Joshua F. and Rose (Allen) Burnett

Joshua Franklin Burnett was born to George and Sarah (Conser) Burnett on April 28, 185 7 at their farm home in section 30 of Haw Creek Township west of Maquon, Illinois. He was th e second child, and only son, of what became five children born to George and Sarah. He join ed an older sister, Mary Elizabeth in the Burnett household and was later joined by sisters ; Ella, Sarah, and Flora.
Joshua grew up on his parent's farm. He was able to grow up close to many of his aunts , uncles and cousins, as there were many Burnett and Conser cousins nearby while he was growi ng up. On his mother's side of the family (Conser), Joshua's uncle's, William and John Conse r, and his aunt, Mrs. John "Mary" (Conser) From, lived nearby with their many children, Joshu a's cousins, until the early 1870s. Joshua was probably typical of many farm children of hi s era which their day included having a large number of farm obligations and chores, but als o fun times which undoubtedly included hunting.
Joshua, like his sisters, attended Libolt Country School in Haw Creek Township, Knox County , Illinois. There he became acquainted a neighborhood girl, Rose Allen. Joshua and Rose wer e married on September 25, 1884. After marriage the couple settled down on a farm near Maquo n. Joshua and Rose farmed in the area for much of their lives. Three years after their marria ge, in 1887, a daughter, Inez, was born to Joshua and Rose at their farm home. Four other chi ldren were later born into the Burnett family. Sarah Martha Burnett was born in 1889, Eva wa s born in 1895, and Orpha Kate was born in 1901. An infant son, Levy Benson Burnett, was sti ll born in 1892 and was buried in Maquon Cemetery. In 1909 tragedy struck the household agai n as eight-year old, Orpha Kate died. She also was buried in Maquon Cemetery.
Inez, Sarah Martha, and Eva all grew to adulthood on the Haw Creek farm of their parents . All three girls eventually married and moved off on their own. Inez married C. Simkins, S arah Martha married Frank Craver, and Eva married Ardo Melander. All through his life, Joshu a was active in farming endeavors and civic affairs. As Joshua and Rose became more elderl y they retired to the town of Maquon, Illinois.
Joshua became ill in late September 1935 and two weeks later, on Saturday October 5, 193 5 he passed away at the age of 78. Funeral services for Joshua were held on Tuesday Octobe r 8, 1935 conducted from the Methodist Church in Maquon. Reverend M.A. Beger, former Pasto r of the Maquon Methodist Church and now of Carrollton, Illinois officiated, assisted by pres ent Reverend Leonard. Casket bearers were William Babcock, T.F. Gooding, D.S. Hartsook, J.L . Duffield, John Claco, and F.A. Smith. The service was conducted in the midst of many beaut iful floral arrangements provided by friends. Joshua was later buried at Maquon Cemetery.
Joshua was survived by his wife, Rose; two daughters, Inez Simkins and Eva Melander; fou r sisters, Mary Darnell of Marionville, Missouri, Ella Housh, Amelia Barbero, and Flora Clark , all of Maquon, and a foster brother, James Nevitt of Fairview, Illinois. Joshua was preced ed in death by his parents, George and Sarah (Conser) Burnett, an infant son, Levy, and two d aughters, Orpha, whom died as a young girl, and Mrs. Frank "Sarah Martha" Craver.
Friends and relatives that traveled a distance to attend the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs . W.S. Wolff, Mr. McNamara and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John McGirr, Mrs. Julia McGirr, Mrs. Fr ed Burgland, Mrs. Ashby, Mrs. Hemphill, Mrs. Flora Bruckwald, Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Grubb, Mr. an d Mrs. Walter Frish, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Mann, Fred Powelson, Mrs. Charles Burkhalter, Mr. an d Mrs. James Wheeler, Miss Lillian Mortensen, Mr. and Mrs. Elery Hollosway, Mrs. Fred Dinnis , Miss Helen Bachus, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Allen, Deatur Rambo and son, and Mrs. Ed Sandidge, al l of Galesburg, Illinois.
Those that traveled a longer distance included: Mrs. R.E. Hunsaker of Camp Point, Illinoi s, Fred Allen of Emporia, Kansas, Mrs. E.J Pearson of Alexis, Illinois, Mr. and Mrs. Harley B utts and Mr. and Mrs. Newton Thurman of Knoxville, Illinois, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Scraggs o f Elmwood, Illinois, Mrs. Frank Woods of Rapateee, Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Potter of Douglas, Illin ois, and Mrs. Mattie Upp of Yates City, Illinois.
Rose continued to live in Maquon after the death of her husband, Joshua. In 1937, Rose' s health gave away and she died that year at the age of 78. Funeral services were conducte d for her at the Methodist Church in Maquon and she was afterward buried beside her late husb and in Maquon Cemetery.
