by
James D. Bish

Flora Belle Burnett was born to George and Sarah (Conser) Burnett on June 24, 1864 at th eir farm home in section 30 of Haw Creek Township west of Maquon, Illinois. She was the las t child, and fourth daughter, of five children born to George and Sarah. She joined older si sters, Mary Elizabeth, Ella Agnes, and Sarah Amelia, and an older brother, Joshua Franklin, i n the Burnett household.
Flora Belle grew up on her parent's farm. She was able to grow up close to many of her aunts , uncles and cousins, as there were many Burnett and Conser cousins nearby. On her mother' s side of the family (Conser), Flora's uncle's, William and John Conser, and her aunt, Mrs. J ohn "Mary" (Conser) From, lived nearby with their many children, Flora's cousins, until the e arly 1870s. Flora was probably typical of many farm children of her era which their day incl uded having a large number of farm obligations and household chores, but also fun times as we ll.
Flora, like her brother and sisters, attended Libolt Country School in Haw Creek Townshi p, Knox County, Illinois and later attended Maquon High School. There she became acquainte d a neighborhood boy, William Clark. Flora and William were married on March 13, 1893 at th e home of her parents, George P. and Sarah (Conser) Burnett. After marriage the couple settl ed down on a farm near Maquon. William and Flora farmed in the area for much of their lives . Almost two years after their marriage, a son, George B., was born to William and Flora a t their farm home on December 2, 1895. About three years later a daughter, Shelley Mary, wa s born at their farm home completing the family of William and Flora Clark.
In 1903, tragedy struck the Clark home as seven-year old George died unexpectedly. Youn g George was buried at Maquon Cemetery. Shelley Mary Clark primarily grew up as an only chil d resulting from the untimely death of older brother. Shelley grew to adulthood on the Haw C reek farm home of her parents. Shelley eventually married and moved off to nearby Galesburg , Illinois.
All through their lives, William and Flora were active in farming endeavors and civic af fairs. Flora was very involved in community events and organizations. She was a member of t he Maquon W.S.C.S. Club, the Illini Club, the Pleasant Hour Club and was very active on the M aquon Cemetery Board. Flora and William lived their entire life in the Maquon, Illinois area.
In 1919, William Clark passed away at his Maquon farm home at the age of 65 and was buri ed at Maquon Cemetery. After the death of William, Flora continued to live on her farm. Sh e maintained an active life style as she continued to be very involved in the community. Sh e was elected President of the Maquon Cemetery Board, a position she held for 30 years. The M aquon Cemetery had special interest for Flora as her grandmother, parents, husband, and son w ere all buried within it.
Flora spent many years alone on her Maquon farm, but about 1950 her health began to dete riorate and she moved in to Galesburg to live with her daughter, Mrs. Shelley Addis, at 975 E . South Street. Flora died at her daughter's home at 7:30 in the evening of July 2, 1952 at t he age of 89. Funeral services for Flora were held at the Methodist Church in Maquon, Illino is on Friday July 5, 1952 at 2:00 in the afternoon. The Reverend Ira Moats officiated. Mrs .
