They are not found in the 1790 census, probably because they had disposed of all property and were living with some of the children.
He resided on the paternal homestead after his father's decease where he inherited the easterly half, about the corner of Elm & Lowell Sts.
Before this he had a large farm on present West St. near Great Pond which he deeded to his son William Thayer. In the deed dated Mar.21,1785 (S.D. 147-262) it is called 40 acres, house and two barns bounded N. on Blue Hill River until it comes to the river out of Great Pond, West on said river to the pond, South on said pond to a ditch, East on the ditch to the river first mentioned. In a deed of the same property dated Jul.10,1787 (S.D. 270-183, recorded in 1821) it is called 50 acres, a house, and two barns, etc.
No settlement of his estate is recorded. His son Solomon received the old homestead and resided there.
He was elected surveyor of highways 1742,1766,1772,75,77,78,1781, hogreave 1747, fenceviewer 1750,58, tithingman 1751,54,63,68, on the Fish Committee 1753,1761,62, constable 1764 but excused, warden 1765,67, fire warden 1772 to 1179 and 1781, on the committee for hiring men 1777. Possibly some of these offices belong to James5 (Richard4-3-2-1).
