Mary attended the first grade through seventh and one month of the eighth at the Miracle School, it was then consolidated to the Johnsville school from which she graduated in May 1945. A job was waiting for her at graduation time due to good cousin Eleanor (Smith) Altman who help her get a job in the payroll department at Ideal Electric where worked as a secretary. During Mary's youth, she was occupied mostly with helping her mother with milking cows, raising pet lambs and chickens, picking strawberries, and loved to sell them to passersby on State Route 42. Also was in 4-H several years, Farm Bureau Youth Council, and regularly attended the United Brethren Church in Williamsport, Ohio. Her hobbies were pitching softball, ice and roller skating. She loved to listen to school band music, patriotic songs and avid county fair goer. After their marriage in 1949, Ralph and Mary moved into their newly purchased farm home of eighty two acres, where they still reside east of Fulton on County Road 25. They had mostly dairy cows and later on had Herefords. Mary had been in real estate sales since 1957 and having owned her real estate business since 1965. In 1980, Mary was encouraged and supported by friends and others to run as a candidate for a County Commissioner post. With their help and support, she had two terms of eight years as the county first woman commissioner. Mary's quote "It has been nice to serve this great county and its people and I will always remember those who were my faithful supporters. As a member of the Fulton Methodist Church since 1951, she taught twenty five years of Sunday school for the youth and is presently teaching adult class. Past President of WSCS and presently chairman of church finance committee, member and past President Morrow County Board of Realtors, member and past President Morrow County Business Professional Club, Morrow County Commissioner Chairman 1982-1985-1988, past board member Morrow County United Appeal and served as Township Chairman and voluntary worker for many years for various fund raisers, United Appeal, Heart, Cancer, Red Cross, Morrow County Republican Women's Club - served as membership chairman different years. Was appointed delegate from the Women's Morrow County Republican Club in 1955 to attend the National Convention in Washington, DC. Elma Hartsook was County president at the time and made the appointment. For 25 years she was one of several county delegates to state convention, served as cochairman on award committee 1986-87 on the Republican Women State Board. During her commission post, she served five years on Legislative Committee for County Commissioners State Association by the State Association President and appointed in 1988 to serve as one of the 22 member board of trustees. Also was vice chairman 1986-7 of board of Governors of a four county area of (JTPA) job training program.
Mary was listed in the Editions listed Who's Who in Ohio 1974, Outstanding Americans 1976, Notable Americans 1976-77, Who's Who of American Women 1977-78, and Morrow County Business
Professional Woman of the Year award.
