HENRY H. RUHL, farmer; P. O., Woodview. Among the successful farmers of Perry Township, Mr. Ruhl deserves more than a passing notice; he is the oldest son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Hosler) Ruhl; he was born in York County, Pennsylvania., April 14, 1808; his father died when he was seven years old,and as he grew up he worked until he was twenty-five years old.
The mother re-married, and they came as a family, in the spring of 1833. Arriving, May 10, they rented a house near where Jacob L. Millerlives, and in August of that year they purchased 160 acres of Mr.Ruhl's present farm, of John Bigham, for $500.
The only improvementsmade were a small cabin and seven acres underbrushed. The family consisted of four children-
Henry H. (subject); Polly, who married John Warner, of Pa.; Rachel married John Garverick; and Jacob. The mother died about 1835; March 20, 1836, he married Catherine Patterson, a daughter of James and Esther (Erstine) Patterson; she was born in York County, Pennsylvania., Sept. 12, 1802; her parents afterwards removed to Maryland, from which they emigrated to Congress Township, of this county, in the fallof 1825, where they entered eighty acres in the woods; they raisedeight children to manhood and womanhood, all of whom were born in theEast-John, Samuel, Peter, William, Catherine, Elizabeth, Mary andNancy. Mr. Ruhl has lived on present place since his marriage; he andhis esteemable wife, who has been a help-mate indeed; both worked inthe clearing together in early days, burning their brush and log heapsat night; Mr. Ruhl and his brother Jacob, went to thirty log-rollingsone spring, and about that many in the fall; he has cleared about onehundred acres here, and now owns three hundred and twenty acres,principally the fruits of his own labor; Mr. Ruhl and his entirefamily are members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church; he has held amembership for forty-eight years, and has filled ably the variousoffices of Elder and Deacon; he has been Trustee of this townshipeleven terms, elected frequently, almost without opposition; Mr. Ruhlhas raised two daughters, and one died in infancy; Catherine andLeah-Mrs. Byram Levering (see sketch); Catherine Ruhl was born Sept.10, 1838, in this township; at twenty-seven she married Jacob Rule, ason of George and Mary Rule (see sketch of Elah Dennis); her husband,Jacob Rule, was born Nov. 28, 1842, in Perry Township, near Woodbury; helived on a farm until eighteen, then became a clerk in a store, forsome time; subsequently he worked for Levering and Merwine about eightmonths, after which he began farming on the lands of H. H. Ruhl, wherehe has lived ever since; in 1874 he purchased eighty acres of land.Four children have been born to them-Eva, born Sept. 24, 1866; Herma,April 21, 1872; Idella, nov. 17, 1874; Heilman H., March 2, 1880. heand his wife are members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

HENRY S. RUHL, farme r; P. O. Andrews; is among the successful farmers in this township; he was born in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania., May 13, 1822, and was the third of a family of nine children, born to Henry and Barbara (Steffey) Ruhl, both of York Co.; the Ruhls are of German descent; the father was a farmer, and Henry naturally turne d to this occupation; he remained at the family home until after he was 28 year s of age; June 15, 1850, he was married to Lydia Winters, and soon after bought a part of his father's farm, on which he lived until 1856, when he sold out, a nd bought eighty acres where he now lives; soon after his arrival his wife died ; she left on child-Amos W., born in Aug., 1851; he subsequently married Ellen Snyder, who was born Aug. 31, 1835, and is a daughter of Jacob Snyder; they hav e had twelve children, of whom nine are living-Enos S., Edgar W., Martha, Barba ra C., Jacob F., Barton H., Mary E., Ida W., and Charles R; Mr. Ruhl has now 25 0 acres of land, and is still extending his boudries; he is among the best farm ers in the township, and does not trade or speculate, but confines his attentio n to the means which will bring him the surest returns; while he is alive to hi s temporal interests, he is not insensible to the duty he owes to the "Giver of all good," and to Him ever ascribes the praise for the blessings he has receiv ed.[
