William E. and Ella A. (Burnett) Housh

Ella Agnes Burnett was born to George and Sarah (Conser) Burnett on February 4, 1859 a t their farm home in section 30 of Haw Creek Township west of Maquon, Illinois. She was th e third child, and second daughter, of what became five children born to George and Sarah. S he an older sister, Mary Elizabeth, and an older brother, Joshua Franklin, in the Burnett hou sehold and was later joined by sisters; Sarah, and Flora.
Ella grew up on her parent's farm. She was able to grow up close to many of her aunts , uncles and cousins, as there were many Burnett and Conser cousins nearby. On her mother' s side of the family (Conser), Ella's uncle's, William and John Conser, and her aunt, Mrs. Jo hn "Mary" (Conser) From, lived nearby with their many children, Ella's cousins, until the ear ly 1870s. Ella was probably typical of many farm children of her era which their day include d having a large number of farm obligations and household chores, but also fun times as well.
Ella, like her brother and sisters, attended Libolt Country School in Haw Creek Township , Knox County, Illinois. There she became acquainted a neighborhood boy, William E. Housh. E lla and William were married on September 9, 1880 at the home of her parents, George P. and S arah (Conser) Burnett. After marriage the couple settled down on a farm near Maquon. Willia m and Ella farmed in the area for much of their lives. Almost two years after their marriage , a daughter, Leota, was born to William and Ella at their farm home on June 12, 1882. Eigh t years later, a son, Floyd was born at their home on February 12, 1890 completing the famil y of William and Ella Housh.
Leota and Floyd Housh both grew to adulthood on the Haw Creek farm of their parents. Bo th children eventually married and moved off on their own. Leota married John Smith in 190 0 and Floyd was married a few years later. All through their lives, William and Ella were ac tive in farming endeavors and civic affairs.
Ella and William lived their entire life in the Maquon, Illinois area. Ella became il l at her farm home north of Maquon in late January 1944. She never recovered and passed awa y at her home after two weeks illness on Friday February 4, 1944 at the age of 85 years. Fun eral services for Ella were held at 2:30 Monday afternoon February 7th at the Methodist Churc h in Maquon, Illinois. Reverend Ira E. Moats conducted the funeral services and Mrs. Sarah B earmore played music selections. Pallbearers were John Barber, Ralph Huggins, Harley Stickell , Frank Pickerel, Reece Smith, and Harley Seaman. After the funeral, burial for Ella took pl ace in Maquon Cemetery.
After Ella's death, William continued to live in the Maquon area. His daughter, Leota Sm ith continued to look in on him as he continued to get more elderly. By 1951, it became incr easingly difficult for Leota to care for her father as his health was rapidly deteriorating . In early October 1951 he was admitted to the Elm Haven Hospital in at Elmwood, Illinois re sulting from his declining health. He spent three weeks as a patient before passing away in t he early morning of Monday October 29, 1951. Funeral services for William were held Thursda y November 1st at 2:00 in the afternoon at the Methodist Church in Maquon, Illinois. Burial w as next to his late wife in Maquon Cemetery.
Survivors of Ella and William included their two children, Mrs. John "Leota" Smith of Ma quon and Floyd Housh of Gilson. A grandson, Wayne Smith, and two great-grandchildren also su rvived Ella and William. One sister, Flora (Burnett) Clark of Maquon, Illinois and many niec es and nephews, also survived Ella.
