Samuel Howard admitted to full communion Jan.26,1706(7), Mary Payne, daughter of Moses admitted Jun.6,1708, so they were probably married in late 1708 or early 1709. He very soon became non-compos mentes as shown by the petition of Mary Hayward, wife of Samuel Hayward of Braintree (S.P. 15-44-,46, New Series) dated Jan.12,1727/8, that "about eighteen years ago he became melancholy, and after that greatly distracted and so continued for a time, and although he grew better and was capable of business for a time, yet at length his distraction returned and he grew very extravagant and outrageous which rendered it very dangerous for me and my children to be with him. I was hereby necessitated to leave him ... and depart to my father's house for safety. It is now eight years since I was forced thus to leave him etc. He seems to grow worse, and takes no care of the estate nor of himself or family... His relations have taken some care of him at times for three or four years but he being very unruly... would run away from them wandering all over the town and working (as the fit took him) sometimes for one and sometimes for another. The housing and the orchard are much decayed.... and likely to be almost wholly lost.... therefore pray your honor to direct and assist me." The selectmen concur. Jonathan Howard, nephew appointed guardian with Joshua & Ebenezer Lampson, bricklayer of Boston bonded, Jan.29,1727, and his son Samuel was appointed guardian in 1738.
