When Lizzie was angry with her children, her slippers flew. She could flip her foot and nail you with a flying slipper with uncanny accuracy. Say the wrong thing and the next thing you saw was a slipper coming striaght for you.
She was a meticulous housekeeper. Friends marvelled at how well kept her house was, always adding 'of course you have the girls to help.' Lizzie's answer was always 'they don't help.' This upset her daughters because it made them sound lazy. The truth was they were willing but no one could do chores to her satisfaction. Anything they did, she would come after them and do it again.
Lizzie was short and overweight. This lead to a funny incident when the family moced to Coventry. She was accustomed to shopkeepers using terms of endearment like Hinny (Honey) or Dear. On her first shopping trip in Coventry, the shopkeeper inquired cheerfuully, "Anything else, Duck?' She slapped down her money and left in a huff. She took the unfailiar term of endearment, Duck, as an insult. Thinking she been called a duck, she got angrier as she walked home. She came home muttering, 'Duck be buggered I'm never going there again Duck be buggered ' Bill pulled the story from her eventually and told her that Duck was just like Hinny. He was saying she looked like a duck. She didn't quite believe her hisband at first. But at couple of days later after listening in the shops, she came to her husband and confessed he was right about Duck.
William and Elizabeth had 13 children plus three? others who died as infants or stillborn. [Mary Cook Farrier Ruhl]
