During the depression the Smiths were one of two families between Williamsport and Shauck (Johnsville) that kept their telephones. A sharp curve in State Route 42 was the cause of bad car accidents and the people would use the Smith's. The Smiths made a lot of lasting friendships and they would stop and purchase farm produce when traveling by. In late spring of 1942 a heavy snow storm caused traffic to come to a stand still. A Greyhound bus and an Omar bakery truck were in the traffic jam. Alta made egg sandwiches for the passengers and the bakery truck sold out. Alta was a member of Williamsport Church and taught the Adult Sunday School class for many years. She was also a member of the Women's Society in which held various offices. Before her marriage taught school in the West Point area. At one time, her father, Jacob Garverick, and her niece, Theresa Garverick all taught school in adjoining districts. Jacob taught for thirty nine years and also owned a store in West Point. [history of morrow co, 1989]

Caroline is one of the major goof ups in the 1925 book. A.H. Gerberich placed her twice in the book - once married to Ohio George Gerberich and also to Samuel Cornbower. Cornbower is correct.
