The first term of circuit court in Jersey county convened Nov. 25, 1839 in a small frame school house ... The first case which came up for hearing before this body was that of J. M. Hurd, for the use of Ezra Hurd, plaintiff, against John W. Slaten, defendant, being an appeal from the justice's court.(case was continued)

HISTORY OF GREENE AND JERSEY COUNTIES, ILLINOIS, 1885 - MISSISSIPPI TOWNSHIP -- The first store was opened by John W. Slaten and Isaac N. Piggott, about a quarter of a mile south of Newbern, on section 32, in 1836. (RLF)

GRAFTON.
Mr. John W. Slaten, one of the oldest citizens in this vicinity, died February 9th after a lingering illness. The deceased was born in the State of Georgia, august 22, 1810, and came to Illinois in 1818, the year the state was admitted into the Union, and resided in the state until the day of his death. About a year ago, while he was in Jerseyville, he got a fall which made him an invalid, and which was doubtless the cause of his death. During the past year he has lived with his son George [skip] Mr. Slaten was buried in Salem burying ground. The wife of his brother, W. D. F. Slaten, died last week of heart disease, and was buried in Grafton cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Cunningham, of Elsah officiated at both funerals. (SF)
